Time for Canadians to buy Pesos ???

Postby PV PETE » Wed Oct 14, 2009 8:14 am

Just checked the money exchange rates. The Can $ buys 12.7 pesos and the Can $ is worth 97.2 US $. When exchanging money naturally one will receive a little less in hand (commissions) but sure seems like a good time to buy Mexican pesos.

Those in the know are saying we'll be at par with the U.S. by the end of the year.
Have already started stashing USD and pesos for next PV trip.

A word of advice though to all Americans and Canadians, change your money at a bank or one of the many money change places (Casa de Cambio) here in PV to get the biggest bang for your buck. Do not go to businesses and restaurants hoping for best exchange. Most of us pay less as it is difficult to keep up with the exchange rates.

I know of no banks any longer exchanging money here in Vallarta. Santander, the last holdout of the open exchange, has just changed their policy to exchange only for bank customers, which is what most do here.

Cambios are the only alternative. ATMs are the best method (be sure you use a secure ATM).

Ooops, sorry about that. I was not aware that the banks did not exchange as I exchange at the Scotia Bank regularly however I do have an account there.

This policy is annoying because the cambios do charge quite a bit more than banks for exchange. The best exchange is still at ATMs. Plastic seems to rule.
